Winsome in Echo Park is the East Side’s Best Brunch

Sunday brunch in Los Angeles can be a serious affair. But it doesn’t have to be. Winsome, in Echo Park on Sunset Boulevard, keeps things fresh, playful, and Instagram-ready while keeping the tables steadily moving so you won’t have to wait too long in a quintessential Los Angeles brunch line. Winsome, in short, is the East Side’s best new brunch spot.

Winsome opens bright and early at 7:30am daily so it’s a new favorite of the neighborhood as the go-to coffee spot for early birds. At 8:30am though is when the real action begins: the kitchen opens! My party and I came on a Sunday at 10 and the place was bustling, lively, and the scent of food in the air was enticingly aromatic.

We were seated in less than fifteen minutes, just enough time for us to enjoy a drink at the fully stocked bar.

The seasonal and fresh cocktails came out surprisingly quickly. The bartenders seemed to be working at lightning-speed but the care in their craft was evident once we were served the immaculately made Bloody Marys and micheladas. They also serve a “Tiki Novella,” a cocktail made with La Niña Del Mezcal Primario, plantation pineapple rum, chicha morada, lime, grapefruit, and flaming tiki garnish, which I noticed other tables enjoying immensely but I’ll save that for when I come back for dinner!

Our waitress was kind and attentive and quick to refill our coffees and waters. For a place so seemingly hip, there was little pretension. It appeared everyone there, even the staff, were there to have a happy Sunday. The pastries are delicious (and you can get them with your coffee to-go) and who knew a house made granola could be so expressive and delicious? Still, we were there to eat and that’s just what we did.

A friend had the grilled corned beef sandwich made with niman ranch brisket, black garlic, cabbage slaw, and aged provolone on rustic bread. He loved it.

I order eggs at brunch so I was excited to get the Potato Rosti with two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs, smoked salmon (yum!), avocado, fennel pollen, and a wonderful basil tahini I simply must learn the recipe of.

We also shared the Kennebeck potato chips and the shaved cauliflower salad to round out our meal. While the restaurant is sleek and modern, it retains a sort of relaxed and casual vibe thanks in no small part to the lovely and exuberant mural and the simple comfy wicker chairs.

We were tempted to keep eating but we thought we’d save some of the menu items – like the delicious-looking duck egg toast and the farro piccolo and grilled chicken salad for next weekend. With a little waiting and anticipation we figured the dishes will taste even better. Until next time, Winsome.
