Held from May through October, Jazz at LACMA offers an enchanting escape into the world of jazz, where each performance promises to be a celebration of creativity, improvisation, and the rich musical heritage of L.A. Best of all, admission is free and open to all, welcoming both seasoned jazz aficionados and newcomers alike. As you settle into the intimate outdoor setting of LACMA’s Smidt Welcome Plaza, surrounded by the museum’s iconic art installations like Urban Light and Levitated Mass, prepare to be serenaded by a lineup of extraordinary artists whose talents transcend boundaries and captivate audiences around the globe. Plus? It’s BYOB. You can bring your own food, drinks, blankets, and folding chairs for a lovely picnic on the lawn or treat yourself and reserve a table at the Stark Bar and go in high style.  Also, admission to the museum is FREE on these Jazz nights from 3 to 6pm so you can really make a day of it.

Among the standout performers gracing the stage of Jazz at LACMA are trailblazers like woodwind virtuoso and spoken word artist Katisse Buckingham. Hailing from the vibrant streets of Los Angeles, Buckingham’s musical journey has been shaped by a diverse array of influences, from the pioneering sounds of Miles Davis and Run DMC to the timeless compositions of Bach and Weather Report. With a resume that boasts collaborations with musical titans like Prince, Herbie Hancock, and Dr. Dre, Buckingham’s performances are a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation that define the L.A. jazz scene. Plus, there’s the incomparable Sweet Baby J’ai, an award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer whose genre-defying work has enraptured audiences across the globe. As the founder and executive director of the Sunset Music Festival, Sweet Baby J’ai has dedicated her career to expanding the boundaries of jazz, blending elements of soul, funk, and R&B into a mesmerizing tapestry of sound. With a roster of collaborators that includes jazz luminaries like Nate Morgan and Rosemary Clooney, Sweet Baby J’ai’s performances are a testament to the enduring power and versatility of jazz music. Rounding out the lineup is saxophonist, composer, and educator Dr. Teodross Avery, whose illustrious career spans the worlds of jazz, pop, and film. From recording sessions with Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone to composing for hit films like “Beauty Shop” and “Brown Sugar,” Avery’s diverse talents have made him a sought-after collaborator and a driving force in the contemporary jazz scene. As the head of Jazz Studies at Cal State University Dominguez Hills, Avery is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of jazz musicians, ensuring that the legacy of this iconic musical genre continues to thrive for years to come.
