The Roberts family originally requested Neutra build them a traditional ranch-style home, but the architect, inspired by the sweeping views of the mountains and the hillside setting, convinced them of his modernist aesthetic. An aesthetic that would come to define the ideal Southern California indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

Neutra’s modular grid, spider leg detailing, & asymmetric compositions combine to create a harmony of balance, transparency, and lightness. But the home sat neglected for years until 2014 when the new owner decided to treat the home to a painstaking restoration with input from Neutra historian and expert Barbara Lamprecht.

The home itself measures 2,580 square feet, sits atop a grassy knoll on 3.45 acres, and is surrounded by towering eucalyptus, pine, and oak trees.

The private grounds boast a kidney shaped pool, koi pond, fireplaces, and built-in planters, several alcoves and entertaining patios.

The restoration inside is just as impressive. Missing elements have been recreated and original details rehabilited.

Just look at the transformation of this kitchen.

The home’s double interior fireplace smartly remains. Cork tile, original terrazzo flooring, gorgeous wood-beamed ceilings, birch paneling and built-ins, original fixtures, stainless steel firewood boxes and more have been added.

The wonderful views of the San Gabriel mountains were, of course, just as wonderful when the home was built but seem even more amazing today through the updated floor-to-ceiling windows.

Each of the four bedrooms are immaculate and bright. Plus there’s a guest or staff quarters.

The bathrooms have, thankfully, been stripped of that floral wallpaper but maintain the original tiles which give the home it’s authentic, vintage, lived-in fee.

The J.M. Roberts Residence is just 22 miles from downtown Los Angeles. It’s an idyllic and serene property and one of Richard Neutra’s noted Southern California masterpieces. More before & after photos below!
