Maestro of the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams | Hollywood Bowl

Friday, September 4–Sunday, September 6, 7:30 p.m.

Few L.A. summer traditions are more quintessential than an evening at the Hollywood Bowl, and this weekend brings one of its most cinematic programs. The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents a tribute to legendary composer John Williams, with music from E.T., Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, and more. Bring a picnic, settle into the Hollywood Hills, and let the soundtrack do the rest.

Fiesta Hermosa

Saturday, September 5–Sunday, September 6, 11 a.m.–7 p.m.; Monday, September 7, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.

Head to the South Bay for one of Southern California’s classic Labor Day traditions. Fiesta Hermosa takes over downtown Hermosa Beach with live music, food, a makers mercado, a mini carnival, and a beer and wine garden, all just steps from the Pacific. It is the kind of weekend where a stroll through the festival can easily turn into an afternoon on the beach.

There may be no more distinctly Los Angeles way to spend a summer night than watching a movie under the stars at Hollywood Forever. Practical Magic | Street Food Cinema at the Autry

Saturday, September 5, doors at 5:30 p.m.; movie at 8 p.m.

For something a little more witchy, head to the Autry for an outdoor screening of the 1998 cult favorite Practical Magic. Street Food Cinema pairs the movie with live music, food, drinks, and a lawn setting that makes the evening feel more like a summer party than a trip to the movies. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with music at 6:30 and the film at 8.

Jazz at LACMA

Friday, September 4, 6 p.m.

LAAS Star Party at Mount Wilson Observatory

Friday, September 4, 7 p.m.–1 a.m.

Trade the city lights for the night sky at Mount Wilson Observatory, where the Los Angeles Astronomical Society hosts a free public star party. Telescopes are provided, and the setting, nearly 6,000 feet above Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains, makes this one of the more unusual ways to spend a Friday night in L.A.

The Charlatans UK bring their North American tour to the Hollywood Palladium, with support from The Dandy Warhols and Mercury Rev. It is a particularly good pick for anyone looking to trade the usual Labor Day weekend fare for a proper night of British alternative rock.
