At The Theatre at Ace Hotel

We’ll play host to the power ambient don, Tim Hecker, who will play the historic theater on January 28th. He’ll be joined by Kranky act Loscil as well as Dublab affiliates M. Geddes Gengras, Leech, Cat 500 and Sage Caswell. Outside the theatre, there will be a street festival between 4th and 7th with shopping pop-ups, a family-friendly kids area and a music main stage.

Night on Broadway is an arts and entertainment festival in Downtown LA. The event is held in celebration of Councilmember Jose Huizar’s Bringing Back Broadway initiative, a ten-year plan for the revitalization of DTLA’s Broadway corridor. Heading into its 3rd year, Night on Broadway has already become one of the largest one-day arts and music festivals in North America, having welcomed more than 60,000 people to Broadway in Jan. 2016.

On Sunday, February 19, one week before the 89th Academy Awards, KPCC In Person will convene AirTalk’s FilmWeek critics for its Oscar preview event. This year, host Larry Mantle and the critics take the stage of the historic Theatre at Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
Built in 1927 by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith, the venue was originally known as the United Artists Theater. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Fairbanks said he hoped the theater would always be a reminder that Los Angeles is the center of production of the film industry.
Ninety years later on the very same stage, Mantle and crew will discuss and debate the contenders for this year’s major Oscar categories. Join us for this special taping in front of a live audience.

The Broad is pleased to present the West Coast premiere of Tyler Hubby’s documentary film, Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present. The film examines the pioneering life and work of artist, musician, and educator, Tony Conrad, and this special iteration of The Un-Private Collectionseries highlights both his extraordinary career and his influence on the work of Broad collection artists including Mike Kelley, Robert Longo, and Tony Oursler. Since the early 1960s, Conrad’s vast, inter-disciplinary repertoire has created and influenced major film and compositional movements. He performed in and recorded the soundtrack to Jack Smith’s legendary Flaming Creatures; he defied conventions of cinema with The Flicker, an experimental structuralist film composed of a precise pattern of alternating black and white frames; he developed and practiced Just Intonation and Minimalism with Stockhausen and La Monte Young; and he even played a part in the formation of The Velvet Underground. A post-screening conversation with Tyler Hubby and Tony Oursler (whose work is on view in the collection installation, Creature, at The Broad through March 19) will be moderated by Henry Rollins. Iconic artist and musician, Kim Gordon, who collaborated with Tony Conrad, will perform to close out the night.

LAKE STREET DIVE

Much has happened since Lake Street Dive released its latest album Side Pony earlier this year: the band was invited to play at the White House, was a music guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbertand onThe Today Show, sold out 42 shows in 2016 throughout the United States, and were featured on Chris Thile’s hosting debut of A Prairie Home Companion, among many other high points. The band recently finished the US leg of its tour, playing sold-out shows for enthusiastic audiences at the iconic Wang Theatre in Boston and Radio City Music Hall in New York, among others, before heading to Europe for the second time in 2016. The new year will start with a bang as the band will be playing shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan before digging into a two-month US tour beginning in February 2017. The US tour will include stops at the band members’ alma mater, The New England Conservatory, for the prestigious school’s 150th anniversary; at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall with The Baltimore Symphony; at The Fox Theatre in Oakland, CA; and at Ace Hotel DTLA.

The second UK group following the Beatles to score a #1 hit in America, The Zombies infiltrated the airwaves with the sophisticated melodies, breathy vocals, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs of their 1960’s hit singles like “She’s Not There” and “Tell Her No”. Ironically, the group broke-up in 1968 just prior to achieving their greatest success – the chart-topping single “Time of the Season”, from their swan-song album “Odessey & Oracle” (recently ranked #100 in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time”). In the intervening years, while lead singer Colin Blunstone went on to develop an acclaimed solo career, and keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent rocked ‘70’s arenas with his eponymous band ARGENT, the legend of The Zombies took on a life of its own. Generations of new bands have cited The Zombies’ work as pop touchstones, including such artists as Neko Case and Nick Cave (who have recorded “She’s Not There” for the popular HBO series True Blood), She & Him, Beck, Belle and Sebastian, The Black Angels, The Fleet Foxes, Beach House and The Beautiful South. Decades later, Blunstone and Argent have resurrected The Zombies, recruiting bassist Jim Rodford (formerly of ARGENT and The Kinks), Rodford’s son Steve on drums, and renowned session guitarist Tom Toomey. The ten songs that make up their latest album, “Breathe Out, Breathe In”, are impeccably crafted; the harmonies are rich, the melodies full, the arrangements exquisite, the organ and piano fresh and the production intuitive. The Huffington Post’s David Wild called the album “inspired” and said “some songs recall the haunting melodic heights of the group’s 1968 masterpiece Odessey and Oracle.”
