Garlic is on its way out. Out of season, I mean. In California, it’s easy for it to seem we have a constant supply of fresh fruits and vegetables no matter the season because so much of what we buy at our grocery stores travels such great distances to reach us. So there’s always been a soft spot in my heart for farmers markets and organic produce sold by local and regional growers. Afterall, What small town would be complete without a weekly Farmers Market? Luckily, the east side of Los Angeles makes up several small towns (the neighborhoods feel like small towns anyway) and so it offers several farmers markets where you can find a wide variety of affordably-priced fruits, vegetables, honey, herbs, bread, flowers, vintage clothing, arts & crafts, and more.
Everyone from local families who live in the neighborhood to some of Southern California’s most respected chefs use our farmers markets as their weekly food source and walk-in pantry. And once you visit any of the markets on our list below it’s easy to see why: vine-ripened and tree-ripened local produce is way tastier than your average grocery supply, you can feel good about eliminating packaging and plastic waste, it’s amazing to know the people who grow your food by name, and so much more. It’s simply amazing to buy food from passionate people who value sustainable agricultural practices.
Below you will find the definitive list of all of Los Angeles’s east side farmers markets that specialize in every crop that’s grown seasonally around our great state of California, for every day of the week. Except for Mondays for some curious reason. That must be the day of rest for our local growers.
The EastSide Food Fest returned to the legendary Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake on Sunday, October 22nd. The annual celebration of the East side’s best restaurants and chefs always draws a huge crowd yet remains remarkably easy to try at least one of every thing from the 35+ vendors who attended this year’s event. Guests are able to sample dishes from local restaurants that may not be on their radar, out of their neighborhood, or over their budget. Trust me, you won’t leave hungry.
Incredible mountain and reservoir views are on offer courtesy of The Pettibone Residence in Silver Lake. 2039 Kenilworth is a three bedroom custom made and single owner architectural home designed by master J.G. Kitashima.
Wolfdown has finally opened in Silver Lake. The restaurant, in the former longtime Nicky D’s Pizza space, is from Jason and Chrissy Kim, the proprietors of nearby Sunset Boulevard stalwart Forage. The stunning remodeled space is like climbing into an adult-friendly treehouse (unlike Forage, there’sna beer and wine), the desserts are delicious, and pretty soon everyone in town is going to be talking about Wolfdown’s Korean fried chicken.
If you’re like me you love a good, short happy hour. I don’t mean the hours, of course. I mean the menu. There’s something pleasurably decadent about being able to say, “One of everything!” Kettle Black, the newish Italian restaurant and bar in Silver Lake, boasts such a menu. There are only five food items plus specials on Peronis, glasses of red and white wine, and cocktails including Punch, Manhattan, Negroni, and Aperol Spritz. Kettle Black is as stylish as it is delicious.
