Galpert was a contemporary of Pierre Koenig and Frank Gehry. He built this home immediately upon graduation from USC for Cecil L. Gardiner and his wife Mary Jane. Gardiner was the boom grip for legendary director Cecil B. DeMille and appeared as an extra in the film Sunset Boulevard when Norma visits DeMille at the Paramount Pictures lot. Gardiner was also a veteran of World War II and when he came back to the United States after the war he wanted a modern home to reflect the new modernity of the American Century. When the Gardiners reached out to USC to find a designer who might be interested in working with them they were introduced to a young A.H. Galpert. Although he was not yet a licensed architect, they were inspired by his youthful energy and ideas and they gave him the job.

A timeless time capsule of the clean lines and sharp angles, wood beams, cork flooring, brick, concrete and glass materials, the home has been maintained almost exactly as it was built over half a century ago.

Great proportions and use of space is realized throughout the single story open floor plan designed precisely for seamless indoor/outdoor living. The main paneled wall seems to shoot right into the backyard, erasing the line between exterior and interior, creating that indoor/outdoor feeling that made California Modernism so famous.

The living room features an angular brick fireplace, soft warm wood details, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to both the private front and back yards creating an idyllic mountain cross breeze.

A dining space sits just off the great room.

The wonderful and original kitchen boasts eat-in seating, vintage chrome hardware, a beautiful Western Holly oven, and orange Formica counters.
