Pop the champagne! As of August 30, Northeast Los Angeles has a new enchanting dining destination in Red Herring, located on Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock.
The restaurant was created from husband and wife duo Dave and Alexis Martin Woodall. Dave is an industry veteran having worked at Blair’s in Silver Lake and Melisse in Santa Monica and Alexis is a film and television producer and also moonlights in an indie rock band. That dynamic only-in-Hollywood combination proves to be a real asset with Red Herring.
Inside you’ll find the design and atmosphere chic yet comfortable. The expansive windows let in massive amounts of light, so I suggest making a reservation for the early evening when the sun is about to set to take full advantage of the restaurant’s dreamy open air upstairs dining room.
Red Herring, from its sleek design of beautiful blues, brass, and wood down to its inventive cocktail menu and wine list to even its moniker may at first seem uniform with other recently opened Hollywood hotspots trying to catch the glamour of Hollywood’s glory days, but this Eagle Rock after all. Guests won’t find an ounce of industry pretension or pompousness here.
Red Herring’s menu can best be described as upscale American comfort food. Start with the Yam Fritters, Blue Crab Cakes, Summer Squash Salad, and maybe the Pâté, which is served with grilled bread and delicious pickled fruits and vegetables. All of Red Herring’s starters are perfect for sharing.
For mains, the Ricotta Agnolotti with wilted kale, pine nuts, and corn puree is a delightful vegetarian dish full of spice and flavor you’ll be craving the next day. Also on offer is a Beef Short Rib, Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffles, and a Pork Chop with red fife, blistered tomatoes, caramelized cauliflower puree, and salsa verde. Also, you don’t have to leave the kids with a babysitter. Red Herring kindly invites you to bring them with a Kids Menu with each item being $6 or less.
But if you do leave the kids at home, Red Herring offers a gorgeous bar with seasonal cocktails including the refreshing An Exaltation of Grapefruit, made with Stiegl Grapefruit Radler, grapefruit, jalapeno, and thyme. Plus a unique list of craft draft and bottled beers including all West Coast breweries and a paired down but elegant wine list including the Padlock Blend from Picayune Cellars in Napa and a Rose from Angeles & Cowboys in Sonoma.
Welcome to the East Side, Red Herring!
