The Best Christmas Events in Los Angeles | December 2021

Happy holidays from The Hollywood Home! With just eight days left of 2021, you may be looking for special events and fun things to do with friends and family as the year comes to a close. It’s that magical time of year again and so I’ve compiled a list of wonderful holiday events from dazzling light displays to ice skating at Dodger Stadium and L.A. Live, holiday movies, live performances, and more, to last you until New Year’s Eve and beyond. As always, be sure to check COVID vaccine or negative test requirements for any event you plan on attending and stay safe out there.

Enchanted: Forest of Light
Ongoing through January 9, 2022
La Cañada
Discovery and wonder abound across the 10 or so illuminated installations in Descanso Gardens’ holiday tradition. The botanical garden’s nighttime experience masterfully mixes hands-on art installations with atmospheric, luminescent forests, all against a background of uplit trees and shimmery sound effects.

Yuletide Cinemaland
Ongoing through December 26, 2021
Street Food Cinema has put together a series of outdoor holiday screenings in the closest thing to a Dickensian town square in L.A.: Heritage Square. In between Victorian home tours, piano sing-alongs, strolls through a light tunnel and sips on hot chocolate, mulled wine and craft beer, you can catch screenings of flicks (showing twice each night, at 6 and 8pm) like ElfHome AloneA Christmas Carol and more. Just make sure to bundle up in your best Christmas sweater.

L.A. Zoo Lights
Ongoing through January 9, 2022
Griffith Park
The L.A. Zoo is staying open after dark every night through January during this holiday tradition. Many of the lighting displays are inspired by the zoo’s wild residents: think elephant statues with whimsical projections, mosaic-like multicolor giraffes and twinkling butterflies. In recent years, its earlier quirky and kitsch qualities have given way to a more polished experience thanks to the addition of a twinkly tunnel, Chinese lanterns and a shimmering wall of lights.

L.A. Kings Holiday Ice Skating at LA Live
Ongoing through January 8, 2022
L.A. LIVE Xbox Plaza/Downtown LA
What better way to pregame a sporting event or concert at L.A. LIVE than with a skate around a pop-up ice rink? Presented by Coca-Cola®, the LA Kings Holiday Ice rink returns after taking a pause last year, with many L.A. Live restaurants offering “Supper & Skate” dinner specials to those who present their ticket stub. Delta SkyMiles Members receive $3 off tickets and access to the Delta SkyMiles Skate Priority Entrance. LA Kings season ticket members will also receive a discount. General admission tickets are only available for purchase on-site during hours of operation.

Ice Skating at Dodger Stadium
Ongoing through December 31, 2021
Dodger Stadium
Take part in a white Christmas as the newly renovated Centerfield Plaza at Dodger Stadium becomes an illuminated, open-air ice skating experience. Happening nightly from 5–10 pm, the holiday festival will also include bounce houses and offer opportunities to take holiday pictures with a variety of backgrounds like giant wrapped gifts, snowmen, Santa’s sleigh, and a 40-foot Christmas tree. You can also enjoy live music performances and wander through light tunnels and interactive installations, including an immersive Northern Lights experience. Holiday-themed food and beverage will be available, including cocktails, craft beers, wine, and hot chocolate.

Christmas at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Ongoing through January 2, 2022
Universal Studios
Muggles can look forward to a bit of sorcery and magic this holiday season. The Harry Potter-themed land at Universal Studios Hollywood has been decked out in holiday decor, including lights and wreaths along the snow-capped rooflines of Hogsmeade Village and, of course, plenty of wintry goodies in the gift shops. You’ll want to hang around after dusk for “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts,” (Nov 26–Jan 2) an approximately seven-minute projection show that illuminates Hogwarts Castle with dancing lanterns, colorful banners and a Christmas tree, all set to a swelling score.

Love Actually Live
Various dates through December 31
The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts/Beverly Hills
Love it or hate it, Love Actually has actually become one of the most iconic holiday movies of this century, so much so that the folks at For the Record and Wallis Annenberg Center have partnered on an immersive musical performance of the film that’s running through the end of the year, featuring Broadway talent and a 15-piece orchestra, plus a soundtrack that features “Christmas Is All Around,” “Trouble With Love,” and “Both Sides Now.” For the first time, out-of-towners can reserve a festive hotel package at L’Ermitage Beverly Hills during the show’s run and the hotel is also offering a thematic pre-show meal at their restaurant Avec Nous with a limited-time menu inspired by the show. Matinee dates will feature an English-inspired high tea service with a special cocktail menu.

Christmas Eve Midnight Mass
Friday, December 24
Saint Thomas the Apostle in Hollywood
Join St. Thomas in person and live-streamed on the St. Thomas Facebook and YouTube for Midnight Mass and, for those of you who are able to join in person, stick around afterwards for a potluck dessert reception!
“Prelude on Irby” by David Willcocks
O come, all ye faithful
O little town of Bethlehem (St. Louis tune)
Silent night, holy night
In the bleak midwinter
Joy to the world! The Lord is come

“Carol Rhapsody” by Richard Purvis
