Celebrity Real Estate Review – November 2017

November has been a busy month for celebrity real estate in Los Angeles. Here you can take a closer look at a select and exclusive group of celebrity real estate deals including the purchases, sales, and listings of Johnny Depp, Eva Longoria, Kathy Griffin, Halle Berry, and many more. Plus the former homes of Elvis Presley, James Coburn, and Ellen Degeneres return to the market.

James Franco sells cute Spanish-style duplex in Silver Lake for $1.35M
Actor, director, and screenwriter James Franco has found a buyer for his Silver Lake duplex after just a couple of months on the market, the Los Angeles Times reports. The property sold for $1.35 million—$401,000 over its $949,000 list price, and nearly double what he paid for the dwelling. The Spanish-style property dates back to 1923, when it was rumored to have been commissioned as a vacation home by early Hollywood filmmaker D.W. Griffith (best known for his “disgustingly racist yet titanically original” Birth of a Nation).

Eva Longoria lists Hollywood Hills compound she bought from Tom Cruise for $14 million
Actress-director-producer Eva Longoria has listed a compound in Hollywood Hills West for sale at $14 million. Earlier this month she bought another home in the Beverly Crest area for $13.5 million. The house she’s selling was previously owned by box-office star Tom Cruise. Set on more than 2.5 acres, the European-style estate includes a three-bedroom main house, two small studios and a guesthouse. Stone paths and walkways connect the various structures.

For Rent: Kelly Osbourne’s West Hollywood Condo
Several years ago rock ‘n’ roll scion Kelly Osbourne, frequently pastel-tressed daughter of chat show host Sharon Osbourne and iconic heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne, quietly purchased a luxury condo at the star-studded Sierra Towers building on the border between West Hollywood and Beverly Hills that’s come available for rent at a rock star sized price of $19,500 per month. The pioneering reality TV star, TV presenter, occasional actress and fashion designer, who lent her voice to the Disney animated series “The 7D” and is currently a judge on “Project Runway: Junior”, acquired the condo in 2014 in an off-market deal for exactly $4 million.

It’s end scene for Johnny Depp in downtown L.A.’s Historic Core
“Pirates of the Caribbean” star Johnny Depp has officially pulled up anchor from L.A.’s Historic Core district, selling the last piece of his five-unit penthouse collection atop the Eastern Columbia Building for $1.425 million. Depp originally listed the five multi-floor penthouses within the Art Deco building last year for a combined $12.78 million. The units, which were offered collectively or individually, brought in a total of $10.88 million. That’s about $3.7 million more than what the actor-producer-musician paid for the properties from 2007 to 2008: $7.173 million.

Kathy Griffin finally sells her ‘I made it’ Hollywood Hills mansion for $4.5M
Comedian and onetime television host Kathy Griffin has finally found a buyer for the extravagant Hollywood Hills mansion she listed a little over a year ago. Variety reports that Griffin is selling the home for just under $4.5 million—well below the $5.495 million price tag attached to the house when it first appeared on the market. The comic bought the house, which is apparently named “Wings,” in 2004 (for $2.85 million) and later told the Wall Street Journal she wanted it to say “screw you Hollywood—I made it.”

Onetime James Coburn residence in Sherman Oaks casts a new tough guy
The onetime home of Oscar-winning actor James Coburn has sold in Sherman Oaks for $4.4 million. Expanded and reimagined by the sellers, the compound centers on a 1950s contemporary set on 2.5 acres. Stockard Channing Re-Lists Above L.A.’s Laurel Canyon
More than a year after she briefly and unsuccessfully attempted to sell a 1950s ranch-style residence above L.A.’s Laurel Canyon with an asking price pushing up on $1.9 million, veteran stage and screen actress Stockard Channing is giving it another go and re-listed the property with a slightly lower price tag of $1.849 million. With two Emmys, plus a dozen more nominations, and a Tony, plus half of a dozen more nominations, not to mention an Oscar nomination in 1993 for the film “Six Degrees of Separation,” a role she originated on Broadway to great acclaim, Channing has owned the property since the fall of 2003 when she picked it up for $1.075 million.

Property Brother Drew Scott buys in Windsor Square
The TV star and his fiancé, Linda Phan, paid $2.3 million earlier this year for a very on-brand residence (it’s a homey fixer upper built in 1921). Now, listing agent Bruce Walker of Rodeo Realty says that the couple has already begun renovating the property—with the work likely to be detailed in future Property Brothers episodes. Just under 3,500 square feet in size, the home has five bedrooms and four bathrooms, plus an additional 967-square-foot space on the third floor. Interior features include hardwood floors, crown moldings, a dining room, breakfast room, and butler’s pantry, and an original Batchelder tile fireplace.

Elvis Presley’s Palm Springs honeymoon house is looking for a buyer
One of the most iconic modern residences in Palm Springs is back on the market. Dubbed the “House of Tomorrow” by Look Magazine in 1962, the house is most famous as the spot where Elvis and Priscilla Presley honeymooned five years later, following a quick and secretive Las Vegas wedding. (Elvis purportedly carried Priscilla over the threshold singing the “Hawaiian Wedding Song” from Blue Hawaii). Designed by prolific architect William Krisel, the house was built for Robert Alexander, of the Alexander Construction Company. The legendary firm built more than 2,000 modern-style Southern California residences during the 1950s and ’60s, but it folded in 1965 after founders Robert and George Alexander died in a plane crash.

‘House of Cards’ Actress Molly Parker’s Echo Park Bungalow on the Market
Commune-raised Canadian actress Molly Parker, nominated for a 2016 Emmy for her role as ruthlessly ambitious Congresswoman Jackie Sharp on “House of Cards,” has listed her cute-as-a-button 1920s Spanish-style bungalow perched above the street in L.A.’s hipster-chic and increasingly expensive Echo Park area for a whisper less than $900,000. The former “Deadwood” actress, set to appear in “Lost in Space,” a reprise of the 1960s TV series of the same name, purchased the approximately 1,300-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bathroom bungalow in 2004 for just a smidgen less than $580,000.

‘It’s Always Sunny’ stars Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson list in Sherman Oaks
It’s always sunny in Los Angeles, but that hasn’t stopped actor and director Rob McElhenney from putting his Sherman Oaks home on the market. The creator and star of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” along with his wife and co-star, Kaitlin Olson, have listed the English Traditional-style house for $2.675 million. The four-bedroom home, built in 2008, sits behind walls and gates on a quarter of an acre.
