April Events at The Ace Hotel

The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles has a long and storied history as one of Tinsletown’s most opulent and prestigious movie palaces. Located on Broadway in downtown, it was originally called The United Artists Theater and was designed by C. Howard Crane in Spanish Gothic style for the newly formed United Artists film studio founded by Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and Mary Pickford. The grand opening was held on December 26, 1927 with “My Best Girl,” a silent film starring Pickford and Buddy Rogers. John Barrymore was the master of ceremonies for the opening. Fairbanks said he hoped the theatre “will always be a reminder of the fact that Los Angeles is the center of production of the film industry.” In a profile by Motion Picture News in 1928, the article declared that it was “the final word in theatre construction.”

The glory days of the United Artists were short lived though, as the theater changed ownership, names, and opened and closed many times over the decades. In 1989 the theatre went dark completely and was later used as a church throughout the ’90s and early aughts. Finally, in 2014, The Ace Hotel purchased the building and restored the theatre to its original ornate wonder and beauty. Over the past few years, both The Theatre at Ace Hotel and Upstairs at The Ace have hosted hundreds of events including film premieres, live music, art shows, Ted Talks, dance parties, book readings, and much more. The hotel’s rooftop bar is one of the best in Los Angeles and the perfect place to grab a drink before a show. LA Chapter, the restaurant in the lobby, boasts delicious oysters and decadent pasta dishes. Around the corner is Colori Kitchen, one of our city’s best Italian eateries. It’s BYOB and there is no corkage fee. And if you’re parking in the hotel’s lot, don’t miss the Banksy mural.
