Streamline Moderne by Architect William Kesling Lists in the Hollywood Hills

Welcome to The Estes Residence, a stunning streamline moderne home designed by legendary architect William Kesling in 1935. One of just 15 single-family residences by Kesling in Los Angeles, this eye-catching home is distinguished by its green horizontal bands, nautical curves, incredible light, and luxe outdoor spaces.

$2,098,000 | 3 beds | 3 baths | 2,089 Sq. Ft. | $1,004 Price/Sq.Ft. | 6,737 Sq. Ft. Lot | Built in 1935

Kesling’s career was divided into two periods: the Los Angeles period, spanning from 1934 to 1937, and the San Diego period,  from 1939 to 1962. During the former period he designed primarily in the Streamline Moderne style, and during the latter in the International Style. Today he is widely recognized as one California’s most prolific practitioners of Streamline Moderne, although his work was largely unappreciated during his lifetime and forgotten after his retirement. In the 21st century, however, Kesling’s buildings have gained a new-found popularity and widespread recognition.

The three bedroom home offers lovely views from the living room’s original steel casement windows. The front deck and patios overlook the quiet Hollywood Hills canyon.

The interior spaces have been lovingly preserved over the years.

The home features plenty of natural light, modern light fixtures, large picture windows, and easy outdoor access.

The main level has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a great work-from-home office.

The bathrooms are vintage and charming and feature skylights and plenty of storage.

The office is primed as an artists or writers studio.

Continue through the cantilevered bridge and find the modern addition from firm Mills Studio designed in 2002.

The additional living spaces offer chic and stylish spaces for both relaxing and entertaining. The expansive living room features a wet bar and Fleetwood doors that lead to the private backyard.

Outside, find a hot tub that feels completely removed from the neighborhood. A treetop paradise getaway.

The indoor/outdoor shower offers a convenient spot post-hot tub.

Back inside, the wonderful primary suite has its own en suite bath, rows of windows, and outdoor access.

From the primary suite, find a nice green lawn perfect for lounging and summer picnics.

The property is sited on a large flat lot and offers several areas primed for al fresco dinners. There’s also an exterior spiral staircase that leads to the rooftop deck.

This rooftop deck offers the perfect spot to enjoy the surrounding Jacaranda trees.

There’s an abundance of bench seating for entertaining, plus a unique perspective on the home’s wholly original skylights.

There’s a swanky indoor/outdoor area with a fire pit and floating chair.

And, last but not least, the property has an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) with a separate exterior entrance on the bottom level of the original home.

This ADU was completely renovated in 2018 and features a beautiful full kitchen with Heath tile and Fleetwood windows/doors.

The bathroom has similarly gorgeous tile work. This ADU truly offers an excellent spot for overnight guests and both short and long term rentals.

The large lot has room for a pool and plenty of parking; including an extra long double sided one-car garage. The Estes Residence has been photographed by the great artist Julius Shulman and published in various architecture books and design magazines since its construction. This incredible one-of-a-kind Streamline Moderne abode is sure to inspire and impress for years to come.
