Welcome To The Druckman Residence, designed by mid-century modern architect and Los Angeles legend Rudolph Schindler in 1941. Remarkably in near-original condition, with only minor updates and alterations, this exquisite home in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Outpost Estates radiates pure Schindler and is an extraordinary exemplification of his singular genius.

Each of Schindler’s houses bears the mark of an independent intelligence seeking new boundaries in architecture.
At The Druckman Residence specifically, light plays an important role through different openings, with views of the sky and the hillside carefully considered and framed. Polished wood floors, walls of glass as well as walls of old-growth rotary-cut plywood offer a striking contrast to the white walls, rafters, and beams. In the living area, a group of large windows below a wide clerestory opens to views, fresh air, and the greenery below.
Incredible three-dimensional sculpture is transformed into functional built-in cabinetry and bookcases that appear exactly where needed, as though Schindler anticipated one’s path.
The stucco cladding of the fireplace has only been slightly altered, stopping halfway to meet the smooth red brick of the romantic fireplace and hearth.
The cook’s kitchen’s details and woodwork were based on Schindler’s original designs. The kitchen opens to the original built-in table and bench seating.
This dining alcove seemingly floats mid-air with incredible treetop views of the canyon below.
The main level has a private study, a bedroom, and, remarkably, the bathrooms throughout are intact. Beyond the kitchen, a balcony railing is framed with wood.
The bedrooms on the lower floor feature large picture windows with calming views.
The bedrooms have more built-in cabinetry and bookcases, with additional storage and a laundry room carved into the hillside.
There are built-in work spaces and the theme of the importance of light and space continues throughout the private quarters.
Back out front, notice the lush pathway that run ups the adjacent garage wall. This secluded walkway leads to the house, set back from the street in a thicket of greenery.
The interior fireplace’s chimney also accounts for the patio’s sleek outdoor fireplace. Brilliantly conceived by Schindler in the 1940s, the dual fireplace creates the sense of two living rooms, one inside and one out, epitomizing Southern California indoor/outdoor living.
At the bottom of the property lies probably one of Modernism’s most beautiful pools, a secret oval emerald gem that according to family lore was designed by Schindler’s colleague and friend, the master architect Richard Neutra.
It is incredibly rare to come across an updated but original work by one of our great mid-century architects. This extraordinary time capsule is joyously timeless and primed for its next era. See more original photos of this historic home below.
